For millions of years, people had looked up to birds and longed to be lifted off the surface of the Earth to glide over mountains and oceans. Yet, it was not until 1783 that hot air balloons first brought us into the sky. With the Industrial Revolution at the end of the eighteenth century, airships, gliders and planes were invented one after the other, and humans could finally reach their destination by navigating through the sky with their aircraft. Still unsatisfied, some began to wonder what lay beyond the sky. Eventually, various research disciplines came together and became a force that would tear through the atmosphere and burst into the universe. As science progresses and rockets travel further into space, the spacecraft they carry are sent into space to herald a new era of space exploration.
