F104 Starfighter – A Defense Hero of the Taiwan Straits
F104戰鬥機為六十年代美國洛克希德公司的產品，設計上最大的特色為短小的機翼，可提高操縱性能，使飛機在高攻角時也不易失速。引擎推力約16,000磅，單具發動機引擎，其性能優越、加速快、能爭取到高空攔截制空優勢，主要任務為攔截與地面的攻擊。1967年元月13日臺海「一一三空戰」空戰中，我空軍更駕駛F104，在金門上空擊落兩架中共米格十九，創下世界空戰史中擊落米格機的紀錄。自1960年執勤開始至1998年5月22日正式除役。
The F104 was produced by the Lockheed Corporation of USA in the ‘60s. Its unconventional short wing design has provided its agile maneuverability and maintained a low speed flight at a high angle of attack without causing stall. It ever shot down two Chinese MIG-19 aircraft on Jan. 13, 1967 in the air battle of “113” above the Taiwan Straits. The F104 started its first service in Taiwan in 1960 and was officially decommissioned on May 22, 1998

關於編號的故事- The Background Story of Assigning the F104’s Serial Number on Display
- 目前停放在太空飛行探索館的F104戰鬥機為1995年由國防部空軍總司令部提供本館陳展，飛機的整修、塗裝以及搬遷皆由空軍總司令部負責處理。由於太空飛行探索館位於本館六樓，增加了搬運的難度，龐大的機身必須拆解成四大部分，由大型吊車分批吊至6樓陽台後，再由人力從小門推進展廳進而組裝，而當時運送至本館的飛機為：F-104G型4303號機，美軍序號:62-12252。 1997年本館開館，F104戰鬥機成為焦點展品，同時也吸引不少飛機粉絲團爭相討論，不少部落格，甚至於維基百科都指出該飛機的編號應該是F-104J型4522號機，因此本館求證於國防部空軍司令部，其於2011年7月8日正式函覆本館該飛機的資料為：F-104J型4502號機，美軍序號:36-8528，同時其最終服役部隊為本軍前第三飛行大隊第二十八中隊。
- The F104 Starfighter displayed in this Hall was provided by the Commander-in-chief of the Air Force, Ministry of National Defense, in 1995. All refurbishments including painting and coating as well as transportation to the site were also provided by the Commander-in-chief of the Air Force. Since its inauguration of display in 1995, many airplane fans pointed out that the serial number of this F104 on display should be No. 4522 of the F-104J type. This Museum then placed the request to the Commander-in-chief of the Air Force for justification of the correct number. As a result, a firm document dated July 8, 2011 was replied and clearly indicates that the correct serial number of this F104 should be 4502 of the F-104J type; while its maiden serial number in the American Air Force was 36-8528. Furthermore, this F104 on display was previously in serve at the 28th Squadron, the 3rd Air Group of the Taiwanese Air Force before its decommissioning.
